Wine Spotlight: Braganini Reserve Merlot

Body

Merlot is the second-most planted grape in the world, behind Cabernet Sauvignon. Generally, Merlot has softer tannins and riper fruit than Cabernet Sauvignon making it an easy-drinking choice.

The word Merlot translates to “young blackbird” in French due to the grapes’ gorgeous blue-black coloring and the fact that blackbirds have historically loved the taste. Known for its silky texture and approachable style, it’s known as the chameleon grape because it adapts to many climates and winemaking techniques.

The Braganini Reserve Merlot is made from grapes grown by grower partners Dan Nitz and Joe and Sue Herman in the heart of the Lake Michigan Shore Appellation. Merlot grown here benefits from the long warm days and cool nights, allowing this early ripening variety ample time to develop rich, dark flavors. The 2021 vintage has black raspberry, dark cherry, and plum flavors finished with vanilla, cedar, and cocoa dusted espresso bean from aging 18 months in French oak. The tannins are on the medium to higher side, which will make this a great wine to cellar for a few years.

As the weather gets colder, this Merlot will compliment all your hearty comfort dishes. Pizza, red sauced pasta, beef stew, roast chicken with caramelized veggies, bacon and gouda macaroni and cheese, and burgers will go wonderfully with this big wine. And don’t forget the dark chocolate!
