Exploring the Aromella Grape

Body

Wine grapes are some of the most complex and interesting biological organisms with varied DNA. They have everything needed to make a vast array of styles and flavors of wine. St. Julian is introducing and planting new varieties all the time. We are excited to introduce you to a French-American hybrid grape: Aromella.

Aromella was developed at Cornell University as a winter hardy grape with aromatic muscat wine characteristics. A cross between Traminette, and the French grape Ravat, Aromella grapes are used to produce a white wine that captures the spininess of a German Gewürztraminer and the sweet honey notes of an Italian Moscato. Believing in the potential of this varietal at his vineyard in Lawton, St. Julian grower partner, Ed Oxley, planted 2 acres of this new aromatic white in 2020.

We are excited to offer our members the first bottling of the Wine Club exclusive Braganini Reserve Aromella. Crazy aromatics, with rich notes of lychee, peach, pineapple, citrus peel, and blossom, this sweet white (6.3% RS) will have you wanting to name your next born (or next pet) after this wine.

“We didn’t fully realize the amazing potential of this varietal," shares winemaker Nancie Oxley. “However, after this first vintage, and tasting this amazing wine, we are actively seeking to expand our plantings of Aromella.”

Due to its medium acidity and tropical sweetness, the Braganini Reserve Aromella is a wine that can pair with many tastes. Try it with foods with a touch of spice like Pad Thai or Mexican Fajitas. Fresh fruit, charcuterie, Hawaiian pizza, and grilled white meats all would be great with this wine!
