Wine Spotlight: Braganini Reserve Viognier

Wine Spotlight: Braganini Reserve Viognier

Viognier (pronounced vee-own-yay) is a medium- to full-bodied white wine that has earned a loyal following as an alternative to Chardonnay. While both wines share a rich mouthfeel, Viognier delivers a more expressive personality. Wine lovers often gravitate toward it for its intensely perfumed aromas of peach, tangerine, and honeysuckle. These exotic notes make Viognier an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys bold, aromatic white wines.

Viognier first gained recognition in the Rhône Valley of Southern France. Since then, growers have planted it in wine regions around the world. Even so, many wine drinkers still consider it a discovery waiting to happen. If you enjoy exploring expressive whites, Viognier may quickly become a new favorite.

The grapes for Braganini Reserve Viognier come from the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, where respected growers Wally and Katie Mauer carefully cultivate them. Southwest Michigan’s cool climate plays a critical role in shaping the wine’s character. The region produces Viognier with vibrant aromatics, balanced acidity, and pronounced tropical fruit flavors. From the start, the winemaking team focused on preserving freshness rather than building heavy richness.

“Viognier naturally ripens with higher sugars and lower acidity,” explains winemaker Nancie Oxley. “Because of that, we harvested the grapes earlier to protect the acidity. We then fermented the wine in stainless steel to keep the fruit at the forefront.”

As a result, Braganini Reserve Viognier showcases expressive flavors of peach, melon, apricot, and delicate floral notes. Its aromatic, fruit-forward profile makes it especially food-friendly. Viognier pairs beautifully with spicy dishes, including cream-based curries and many Asian cuisines. It also complements roasted chicken, pork, lobster, shrimp, and creamy cheeses.

Braganini Reserve Viognier invites exploration. Whether enjoyed at the table or shared with friends, it offers a fresh expression of a classic grape that continues to surprise and delight with every glass.
