Grapes of Legacy
November 2025 Wine Club Newsletter
At St. Julian, we take pride in our commitment in supporting local farms and growers — a tradition that has been cherished for over a century. The relationship between grape growers and winemakers is built on a foundation of collaboration and for over 100 years, this partnership has led to excellence in the Michigan wine industry. St. Julian believes in the quality of the fruit grown in the Lake Michigan Shore and the vow and excitement of the growers to be a part of creating something special. This promise of excellence is found in every Wine Club bottle!
Growers like Bryan Cronenwett and Mark and Lesley Welburn share in this legacy. Nestled in the heart of the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, Cronenwett Family Farms tend over 350 acres of grapes like Catawba, Foch, and Chardonel. “In the 1970s, we planted French hybrid grapes specifically for St. Julian,” shares Bryan Cronenewett, 7th generation family grower. “St. Julian has been a pioneer in the Michigan wine industry, believing in the potential of our wines long before many others did.” It is this belief, along with high expectations and support that has allowed the growers to continue evolving and thriving in an industry that is not always easy. “Growing grapes is a way of life for us,” says Bryan. “As most farmers will tell you, it’s not like other jobs. You experience the highs and lows that Mother Nature throws at you — from having the best year ever in 2023, to facing one of the worst years in 2024. It’s hard work, but the reward of producing a beautiful crop is immeasurable. We also truly appreciate the multi-generational teamwork between St. Julian and the growers — it builds strong bonds. Partnering with a company that has consistently led the sector is truly rewarding.”
By shining a light on the dedication of our local growers, we enhance the importance of supporting locally sourced ingredients. Supporting local vineyards and farmers not only enriches our communities today but also plays a crucial role in preserving the region’s vitality for future generations. Cheers to a growing and shining Michigan legacy!

Unparalleled
Located between the 30th and 50th parallels, Michigan is one of the world’s best wine regions. St. Julian primarily gets its fruit from the Lake Michigan Shore AVA located along the 42nd parallel north latitude. The “lake effect” from Lake Michigan provides an excellent growing season, while the regions well-drained, glacial soils make this location prime for viticulture. However, when Mother Nature is your partner, nothing is guaranteed. Such was the case in 2024, when a severe January freeze impacted many of the European grape varieties in the Lake Michigan Shore (LMS). Thankfully, St. Julian has excellent grower partners in the Old Mission Peninsula (OMP) located along the 45th parallel, where the weather was not as severe. We are pleased to offer members a new wine from across the parallels!
Staying true to our commitment to Michigan fruit, our winemakers sourced Pinot Gris grapes from the OMP and blended them with Grüner Veltliner from the LMS, creating a dry white of unparalleled quality! Light in style, Unparalleled 2024 is a blend of 74% Pinot Gris and 26% Grüner. Interestingly, Pinot Gris has skins that are slightly pink in color. As the grapes traveled the 3 hours south to the winery in Paw Paw, the juice was exposed to extended contact with the skins, giving a gorgeous hue to the wine. Flavors of peach, apricot, apple, and cantaloupe are balanced with great acidity. Zippy, bright, and refreshing, this wine is incredibly easy to drink. A crowd-pleasing option, you will want to grab a bottle or two for all your upcoming gatherings!
Fro-Zen
The world needs more “zən,” – that sweet spot where life feels calm, simple, and connected. And what captures those qualities better than a glass of wine! Every sip holds the story of the earth, the weather, and the journey from grape to glass connected by the skill of the winemakers. Introducing the new exclusive sweet red, Fro-Zen (7.5% RS)!
Made from cryogenically frozen grapes, this sweet red combines the beauty of nature with the brilliance of science. Winemakers use this cryogenic technique to concentrate sugar and flavor. Water in grapes freezes at a higher temperature than the natural sugars and acids. By pressing the grapes while still frozen, the water ice crystals are left behind and only the highly concentrated juice is extracted. Concentrating the flavors and sugars, while maintaining the acidity gives you a sweet wine that is fresh, rather than syrupy. This wine just hits differently. It’s a full-on flavor experience of boysenberry, blackberry, plum, and blueberry. Members who were at the VIP Festival Kick Off event in September were able to get a sneak peek and the feedback was “YUMMM! This is delicious!” Level up your spicy food by contrasting the sweetness of the wine with the savory or spicy notes of curries, Asian foods, and BBQ. Pairing with cheesecake, berry tarts, and especially dark chocolate is an easy way to elevate your dessert experience. It’s delicious mixed with bubbles for a spritzer or paired with salty hard cheeses like aged Gouda or Parmesan. So many options!
St. Julian's New & Improved Distillery
In our continued commitment to providing the best Michigan craft beverages, St. Julian is pleased to announce the acquisition of MichiGrain, a leading innovator in craft grain spirits. MichiGrain has sourced premium grains from local farmers within a 60-mile radius of the distillery, ensuring the highest quality ingredients. This new collaboration between St. Julian and MichiGrain aligns with St. Julian’s mission to produce authentic, handcrafted spirits that reflect Michigan’s rich agricultural heritage, an initiative they plan to continue and expand upon.
“Our investment in advanced distillation technology and a dedicated production environment reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and community,” said Apollo Braganini II, President of St. Julian Winery and Distillery. “By joining forces with MichiGrain, we are positioning ourselves to lead Michigan’s craft spirit industry into a new era of growth, creativity, and quality.”
All MichiGrain operations have been moved and integrated into St. Julian’s state-of-the-art campus in Paw Paw. A new, dedicated space for premium spirit production houses cutting-edge equipment designed to elevate quality, efficiency, and versatility in distillation. This new facility is equipped with a modern continuous column still, making it perfect for producing neutral spirits with exceptional purity and consistency.
The addition of a traditional pot still provides the flexibility and craftmanship necessary to create complex, small-batch spirits providing St. Julian Spirits Club members with exclusive access to new limited products. These spirits may showcase unique blends, experimental batches, or special aging techniques all available to members. “For over a century, our commitment to working with local farms and producing high-quality wine, making us the most award-winning winery in Michigan.” added Braganini. “We aim to carry that same legacy into the distillery side of our business, aspiring to become the most awarded distillery in Michigan, all the while continuing to support local agriculture through this exciting acquisition.” Cheers to more amazing Michigan craft products!
