St. Julian Winery & Distillery, Michigan’s largest and longest-operating winery, has reached a major milestone. Today, the fourth generation of the founding family has stepped into leadership at the Paw Paw–based company.
Following its centennial celebration, St. Julian announced that Apollo Braganini II assumed the role of President on August 1, 2022. Previously, his father, John Braganini, stepped into leadership in 2016 after the unexpected passing of his brother, David. Named after his paternal grandfather, Apollo becomes the sixth family member to lead the winery. Together, Apollo and his brother, Dario Braganini, will guide the company into its second century.
Originally, Mariano Meconi founded the business in Canada in 1921 under the name Border City Wine Cellars, later known as Meconi Wine Company. After Prohibition ended, Meconi relocated operations to Detroit. Eventually, the winery settled in Paw Paw in 1936. At first, the business operated as The Italian Wine Company. In 1941, it adopted the name St. Julian Winery, honoring the patron saint of Meconi’s birth village.
Over time, Mariano and his wife, Avelia, raised three children who each contributed to the winery’s success. Their children included Robert, Julia, and Eugene. In particular, Julia and her husband, Apollo “Paul” Braganini, carried the family legacy forward. Inspired by his grandparents and parents, David Braganini joined the business in 1973 and served until his passing in 2016.
At that point, John Braganini stepped into the leadership role. Soon after, he welcomed his sons, Apollo and Dario, into the company. Today, John continues to support the winery as Board Chairman and corporate advisor.
“From the beginning, working with my sons was something I always hoped for,” says John Braganini. “Now, having that opportunity at St. Julian has truly been a gift.” Alongside his wife, Sarah, John has helped usher in a new era for the winery.
“I felt drawn to the winery from a very young age,” says Apollo Braganini II. “In 2018, I joined the family business and took on the challenge of revitalizing our wholesale and distribution channels.” Since then, he has learned the complexities of the business while driving growth across all sales avenues.
Over the past five years, Apollo and Dario have focused on expanding St. Julian’s wholesale presence. As a result, the winery has seen significant sales growth throughout the Midwest. Meanwhile, as Outstate Wholesale Director, Dario leads outstate sales operations from his base in Indianapolis.
Looking ahead, Apollo will continue to emphasize quality across St. Julian’s portfolio of wine, cider, and spirits. At the same time, the winery remains committed to Michigan agriculture, technological advancement, and production innovation.
“Every day, it is a privilege to work with such a dedicated and talented team,” says Apollo. “Moving forward, I am honored to help lead St. Julian into its next chapter alongside my brother.” He adds, “Ultimately, we are excited to carry forward our family’s legacy.”
Founded in 1921, St. Julian Winery & Distillery remains family-owned and operated. In addition, at its downtown Paw Paw winery, the team produces award-winning wines, sparkling juices, spirits, and hard cider. Beyond Paw Paw, St. Julian operates tasting rooms in Dundee, Frankenmuth, Rockford, Troy, and Union Pier, Michigan.
