From Dream to Vineyard: Matt Deitrich's Journey of Family, Farming, and Grape Growing
Matt Deitrich's journey in farming began at a young age. While still in high school, he worked at a large grape farm and quickly discovered his passion for this line of work. That initial experience ignited his dream of cultivating his own grapes, setting him on the path to becoming a wine grape farmer.
At eighteen, Matt rented about 20 acres of grapes, partnering with a local juice producer. He invested in equipment and started farming as a side project. However, after five challenging years as a first-generation farmer, he recognized the difficulties of the industry and decided to take a break to regroup before gradually returning to the wine grape market.

During his earlier farming years, Matt forged valuable friendships and connections, which ultimately facilitated the purchase of a 10-acre vineyard featuring Merlot, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling grapes. This acquisition soon paved the way for further expansion when he successfully purchased an additional 20-acre vineyard, effectively tripling his operations.
This season, Matt made a significant leap forward by acquiring 75 acres and renting another 60, bringing his total to approximately 180 acres cultivated with 18 different grape varieties. The Lake Michigan Shore has played a crucial role in fostering his love for grape growing and facilitating his operational expansion in the region. "We are at a similar latitude as some of the world-renowned vineyard regions in Europe," shares Matt. "Thanks to Lake Michigan's influence in moderating winter temperatures, we can grow sensitive varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling, along with American and French hybrids."
What makes grape growing even more meaningful for Matt is the involvement of his family. His wife, Emily, and their children play an integral role in the farm, fostering teamwork and imparting the values of hard work and agriculture to the next generation.

Matt’s long-term vision is to continue expanding his operations and producing high-quality grapes. He hopes to inspire not only his children but also other young farmers within the community. "Through the ups and downs, God has provided Emily and me with incredible opportunities and mentors to support us along the way," he reflects. "We are forever grateful for their guidance and wisdom, and it is our aspiration to pass the torch to others in the future."
Celebrating the local vineyards and farmers in Southwest Michigan is vital for preserving the region's agricultural heritage and boosting its economy. Producers like the Deitrich family not only enhance the unique flavors and diversity of the wines and juices crafted at St. Julian, but they also cultivate community connections and promote sustainability through responsible farming practices.
“Growing for St Julian is more than a buyer seller transaction, it truly is a partnership,” explains Matt. “We grow the best fruit possible, and they create world class wines. I love the commitment to local growers and how connected the Braganini family as well as Nancie Oxley and the rest of the winemaking team is with our operations. The recognition the growers receive by having our names on the back of the bottle from our fields is an honor and so meaningful.”

By shining a light on their hard work, we raise awareness about the significance of locally sourced ingredients, fostering stronger relationships between consumers and the producers who nourish us. Supporting local vineyards and farmers not only enriches our communities but also helps safeguard the region's vitality for future generations.
That’s why, at St. Julian, we are committed to supporting local farms and the production of high-quality wine and juice—a tradition that has been cherished for over 100 years.
